HAIKU

H A I K U

A haiku is a form of poetry. Originating in Japan haiku have a unique format where it only consists of three phrases. Seventeen syllables in all, each phrase must consist of 5,7, and 5, syllables respectively.

Japanese haiku are typically about nature or have a seasonal reference. American haiku are not really limited to a particular topic. Japanese haiku are traditionally written in one single vertical line, while American haiku are written in three lines according to the three phrases.

There is no true comparison between American culture and Japanese culture. My personal haiku haves focused on things I relate to and see in my day to day life. I am aware that because of the culture in which work I will never be able to capture the essence of a true haiku. I see haiku as a great way to organizes and express ones thoughts. Haiku is also the perfect seg-way into the word of literary arts.
